Wall Mounted Cabinets

A wall-mounted cabinet is a closed storage unit fixed to the wall instead of standing on the floor. It keeps supplies at eye level and within reach, and frees the floor below, which matters in small rooms and in places that are cleaned often: the floor under a wall cabinet can be mopped without moving anything.

In hospitals, wall cabinets are used in wards, nursing stations, treatment and examination rooms and utility rooms for medicines, dressings, consumables and records. Health building guidance such as the NHS HBN 00-09 asks for fittings with smooth, cleanable surfaces that stand up to repeated disinfection, and a cabinet with plain, flat doors and no exposed seams is easier to wipe down than open shelves.

The doors are the part used most. Double-panelled doors are stiffer and flatter than a single sheet, and silent-closing doors avoid the bang of a steel door shutting in a ward at night. A curved handle is easy to grip and has no sharp corners to catch clothing.

Choosing between the two materials comes down to how the cabinet is cleaned. Stainless steel has no coating to chip or scratch, so it stands up best to daily disinfection and wet cleaning; SS 316 resists chlorides and stronger disinfectants better than SS 304. Powder-coated mild steel is strong and costs less, and is a good choice where the cabinet is wiped down rather than washed. If a coating is chipped, touch it up so the steel underneath does not rust.

A wall cabinet is only as secure as its fixing. The wall type (brick, concrete block or a partition), the weight of the cabinet when full and the fixings used all decide how much it can safely hold, so heavy items are best kept on the lower shelves or in floor-standing storage. Mount it high enough to clear worktops and heads, but low enough that staff can see and reach the top shelf without a step. Above a bed, keep the cabinet clear of the patient's head and of any equipment that is moved in and out, and leave room for the doors to swing open fully.
