Hospital Cabinets

A hospital cabinet is a closed, lockable storage unit for medical supplies, medicines, instruments, linen and records. Examination rooms, treatment rooms, operation theatres, wards and patient rooms each have their own storage needs, and cabinets keep those supplies organised, clean and close to where they are used, under lock and key.

Good storage is part of infection control. Health building guidance such as the NHS HBN 00-09 asks for fittings that can withstand repeated cleaning and disinfection, with smooth surfaces that do not hold dust or dirt. Closed cabinets also keep stored items off open shelves, where they gather dust and are handled more often.

Locks matter just as much. Medicines and some supplies must be kept locked away, and many hospitals keep routine medicines and supplies in one cabinet and give controlled drugs their own, separately secured storage. Check your pharmacy and regulatory rules for what each cabinet must have, and tell us the lock you need.

Choosing between the two materials comes down to how the cabinet is cleaned. Stainless steel has no coating to chip or scratch, so it stands up best to daily disinfection and wet cleaning; SS 316 resists chlorides and stronger disinfectants better than SS 304. Powder-coated mild steel is strong and costs less, and is a good choice where the cabinet is wiped down rather than washed. If a coating is chipped, touch it up so the steel underneath does not rust.

Where a cabinet stands matters too. Placing it close to where supplies are used saves staff walking and keeps doors from being left open. Keep it clear of sink splash, and leave space to clean around and under it, or choose a wall-mounted cabinet so the floor below stays clear. Label shelves, keep heavy items low, and leave a little space between stock so air can move and dates are easy to check.
