Bed Side Cabinets

A bedside cabinet, sometimes called a bedside locker, stands beside a patient's bed in a ward or patient room. It gives the patient a place for personal belongings, water, glasses, a phone and books, within reach of the bed, and gives nurses a surface for a tray or the things they need during care.

Because it sits right beside the patient, it is touched constantly and cleaned at least daily and whenever a patient leaves. Infection control guidance for healthcare buildings, such as the NHS HBN 00-09, asks for furniture that withstands repeated cleaning and disinfection, with smooth surfaces that do not hold dirt. Rounded corners, flush surfaces and no open seams make that quicker, and a cabinet that can be moved lets the floor beneath and around the bed be cleaned properly.

A good bedside cabinet is also the right height to reach from the bed, steady enough that a patient can lean on it, and easy to move out of the way when staff need room around the bed. Lockable storage helps keep patients' valuables safe on a busy ward. On which side of the bed the cabinet stands matters too: placing it on the side the patient uses to get in and out keeps belongings within reach without stretching across the bed, while leaving the other side clear for staff, equipment and the saline stand.

Choosing between the two materials comes down to how the cabinet is cleaned. Stainless steel has no coating to chip or scratch, so it stands up best to daily disinfection and wet cleaning; SS 316 resists chlorides and stronger disinfectants better than SS 304. Powder-coated mild steel is strong and costs less, and is a good choice where the cabinet is wiped down rather than washed. If a coating is chipped, touch it up so the steel underneath does not rust.
