Guide

What is a saline stand and how does it work?

A saline stand, also called an IV stand or IV pole, holds bags and bottles of saline, other intravenous fluids and medicines above the patient while they drip into a vein. Gravity drives the flow, so the bag has to hang higher than the patient, and the stand keeps it there, beside the bed or the chair, for as long as the infusion runs.

A stand has three parts that matter. The hooks at the top hold the bags and bottles; more hooks let several infusions run at once. The pole sets the height of the bag above the patient, and on many stands it can be raised or lowered. The base keeps the whole thing upright: a stand carries its weight high up, so a wide base is what stops it tipping.

Tipping is a known hazard. A stand with a narrow base can fall over when it is pushed across a threshold or a bump, or when a patient leans on it while walking with it, and a falling stand can pull out an IV line. Bases with five legs spread the weight over a wider footprint than three or four legs, and a heavier, lower base adds stability. Where patients walk with the stand, castors that roll smoothly matter as much as the base.

Saline stands are also touched by many hands and cleaned between patients, so smooth, rust-free surfaces that wipe clean quickly are important. Stainless steel stands up best to repeated disinfection, while powder-coated mild steel is a practical, lower-cost choice for general wards.

Using a stand well is part of patient safety. Place it on the same side of the bed as the IV site, so the line runs straight and is not stretched across the patient or caught on the bed rails. Hang only fluids and the items the stand is designed for: bags, pumps or baskets hung on one side make it top-heavy and lopsided. When a patient walks with the stand, check that the line is long enough and that the castors roll freely, and push the stand rather than pull the line.

Like other ward equipment, stands should be checked regularly. Look for bent hooks, a pole that no longer locks at the set height, loose legs and worn or sticking castors, and take a damaged stand out of use until it is repaired. Clean it between patients, paying attention to the hooks and the base, where splashes collect.

Our saline stands are made in SS 304 or SS 316 stainless steel, or in powder-coated high-grade mild steel. They are sturdy, durable and easy to maintain.

Number of hooks

Count the infusions that run at once, so there is a hook for every bag and bottle.

Height

The bag must hang above the patient in a bed or a chair; check the height you need.

Base and stability

A wide base, such as five legs, keeps the stand upright on thresholds and bumps.

Castors

Smooth castors where patients walk with the stand; a fixed base where it stays beside the bed.

SS or powder-coated MS

Stainless steel for ICUs and theatres; powder-coated MS for general wards.

Cleaning
