What is a drum lifter and tilter and how does it work?
A drum lifter and tilter, also called a drum tilter or barrel lifter, is a wheeled machine that grips a drum, lifts it off the floor, carries it and then tilts it so its contents can be poured or charged into another vessel. It replaces lifting and tipping heavy drums by hand, which is one of the riskiest material handling jobs in a plant.
The machine has a base on castors, a vertical mast and a carriage that travels up and down the mast. The drum is held by a clamp around its body. Depending on the design, the carriage is raised by a hand-operated hydraulic pump, a battery-powered electric drive or compressed air. Once the drum is at the right height over the receiving vessel, the drum holder turns on a pivot and tilts the drum so material flows out under control, then brings it back upright.
Our drum lifter and tilter is made in SS 304 with a matt finish for clean areas, and is also available in mild steel. It is built for drum handling inside the plant and outdoors, and is made to suit your drums and the height of the vessels you charge. Before quoting, we ask for the drum diameter and material, its full weight and the height you pour into, so the machine is built for your drums rather than adapted from a standard model.

Lifting mast
A carriage on a vertical mast raises the drum from floor level to the height of the vessel you are charging.
Drum clamp
A ring clamp holds the drum body firmly while it is lifted, moved and tilted.
Tilting for pouring
The drum holder turns on a pivot, so the drum can be tipped and its contents poured in a controlled way.
Mobile base with castors
The loaded drum is pushed across the floor on the machine itself, with no separate trolley needed.
SS 304 or MS
SS 304 with a matt finish for pharma and food areas; mild steel for general industrial and outdoor use.

How to choose the right drum lifter and tilter
Drum weight and type
Tell us the drum diameter, whether it is steel, plastic or fibre, and its full weight. These set the clamp and the lifting capacity.
Lift height
Measure the height of the inlet you pour into. The mast must lift the drum high enough to clear it and tilt over it.
Tilt and pouring
Tell us whether you empty the whole drum at once or pour part of it, so the tilt can be controlled the way you work.
How often you use it
Tell us how many drums you handle per shift; it helps decide how the lift should be powered.
SS or MS
Choose SS 304 for pharma, food and wash-down areas, and mild steel for general industrial and outdoor use.
Floor, aisles and doors
The base has to pass through your doors and fit around the vessel being charged. Share your layout and clearances.
