What is a drum trolley and how does it work?
A drum trolley, also called a drum dolly or container trolley, is a low wheeled base that a drum or container stands on, so it can be pushed from one place to another instead of being rolled, dragged or carried. It is one of the simplest pieces of material handling equipment, and one of the most used in plants that store and dispense liquids and powders in drums.
The reason is weight. A filled 200-litre drum can weigh more than 200 kg and has almost nothing to hold on to; rolling or tipping a full drum by hand risks spills, damaged drums and injured backs. A trolley takes the weight on its castors and keeps the drum upright and stable, so one person can move it with a steady push.
Our SS drum trolleys have a ring that locates the base of the drum on a cross-braced platform, with castors underneath. They are made with a push handle, for steering without bending down, or without one, as a low base that stays under the drum. We build them for drums and containers from 5 litres to 250 litres, in SS 304 or SS 316 with a matt or mirror finish.

A push handle fixed to the ring lets the operator steer the drum from standing height, without bending to push the drum itself.

How to choose the right drum trolley
Drum diameter
Measure the base of the drum or container you move. The ring should fit it closely so the drum cannot slide. Ring diameter made to fit your drum or container, from small containers up to 250-litre drums.
Full weight
Tell us the drum size and what it holds. Its full weight sets the platform and castor rating.
Wheels and castors
Polyurethane wheels suit cleanroom and epoxy floors. Ask for castor brakes if drums are parked on the trolley.
With or without handle
Choose a handle for regular movement over longer distances, or a low base for storage and short moves.
SS 304 or SS 316
SS 304 suits most areas. SS 316 resists corrosion better where drums hold aggressive chemicals or are washed often. Stainless steel throughout, so the trolley can be washed and disinfected along with the drums it carries. Smooth stainless steel surfaces with no paint to chip, easy to wipe down between uses.
Keeping the drum stable
Tell us if drums cross ramps, thresholds or uneven floors, so the ring height and castors keep the drum steady. Flat cross bars under the ring carry the drum's weight evenly onto the castors and keep the base rigid.

Is a drum trolley the same as a drum lifter?
No. A drum trolley moves an upright drum along the floor. A drum lifter and tilter grips the drum, lifts it and tilts it so its contents can be poured into another vessel.
