SS Cage Trolley

A cage trolley is a wheeled base with mesh walls on three or four sides. The mesh holds bulky or loose items in place while they are moved, so boxes, bags, linen and containers do not slide off when the trolley turns, crosses a threshold or goes up a ramp. Because the walls are open mesh rather than solid sheet, staff can see what is inside, air moves through the load, and the trolley is light for its size and easy to wash.

Moving a load in a cage trolley is safer than carrying it or stacking it on an open platform. Manual handling guidance says to load the heaviest items at the bottom so the centre of gravity stays low, to stack in layers rather than tall columns, not to overload the trolley, and to push it rather than pull it, with the hands on the handle and the body behind the load. A cage that is the right size for the load, with castors that roll easily, keeps the force needed to start, steer and stop the trolley low.

In hospitals, cage trolleys are widely used for linen. Infection control guidance for healthcare linen, such as the UK's HTM 01-04, keeps clean linen and used or soiled linen apart in storage and transport, asks for linen on trolleys to be covered, and for trolleys to be visibly clean and washed and dried regularly. In practice that means separate trolleys for clean and used linen, marked so they are never mixed, with smooth surfaces that can be wiped and washed.
