Working Table

A hospital working table is a sturdy, flat work surface for the jobs that happen beside the patient and behind the scenes: laying out instruments and dressings, preparing medicines and samples, writing up notes, and holding equipment. Examination rooms, treatment rooms, operation theatres, wards and patient rooms each need tables, and each puts different demands on size, height and finish.

The top is the part that matters most. It is wiped and disinfected many times a day, so it should be smooth, flat and free of seams where fluids can collect. Health building guidance such as the NHS HBN 00-09 asks for surfaces that are impervious, quick to dry and not damaged by detergents and disinfectants. Folded, rounded edges are kinder to hands and clothing than sharp sheet edges, and an undershelf keeps boxes and equipment off the floor so the floor can be cleaned.

Height and stability matter too. A table at the right height for the work, standing or sitting, saves staff from bending over it all day, and a rigid frame with level feet stops it rocking when someone leans on it or when equipment is placed on it. Where a table must be moved between rooms or out of the way for cleaning, wheels with brakes are worth considering. Leave space under and around the table for cleaning, and keep cables and equipment tidy so nothing hangs over the edge where it can be knocked.

Choosing between the two materials comes down to how the table is cleaned. Stainless steel has no coating to chip or scratch, so it stands up best to daily disinfection and wet cleaning; SS 316 resists chlorides and stronger disinfectants better than SS 304. Powder-coated mild steel is strong and costs less, and is a good choice where the table is wiped down rather than washed. If a coating is chipped, touch it up so the steel underneath does not rust.
