Guide

What is a UV cabinet and how does it work?

A UV cabinet, also called a UV chamber, is a closed stainless steel cabinet with a germicidal ultraviolet lamp inside. Small items, such as tools, sampling accessories, glassware, garments or components, are placed inside and exposed to UV light for a set time to reduce the number of microbes on their surfaces before they are used or stored.

Germicidal lamps emit UV-C light at around 254 nm, a wavelength that damages the DNA of bacteria, moulds and viruses on the surfaces it reaches. The effect depends on the dose: the strength of the light at the surface multiplied by the exposure time. That is why a timer matters, and why lamps need replacing after their rated hours, since their UV output falls while they still appear to glow normally.

UV has clear limits. It acts only on surfaces in direct line of sight, so shadows, folds, dust and the underside of items receive little or none. It reduces the microbial load on clean surfaces; it does not replace cleaning or sterilisation. Items should go into the cabinet already clean, spread out so the light reaches them. UV-C also harms skin and eyes, so the lamp should run only with the door closed.

Our UV cabinet is built in SS 304, with SS 316 on request, in a mirror finish. It has an integrated UV germicidal lamp, a UV timer control with a digital display, a single shelf and a lockable door with a safety key lock.

In practice a UV cabinet is one step in a routine, not the whole of it. A typical sequence is to clean or wipe the item with an approved disinfectant and let it dry, place it in the cabinet spread out on the shelf, close and lock the door, run the timed cycle, then take the item straight to where it is used or into covered storage. Turning items over between cycles helps reach the surfaces that faced the shelf.

Place the cabinet close to where the treated items will be used, so they are not carried back through less clean areas after treatment. Keep the space around it clear, and make sure there is a power point within reach, without cables trailing across walkways.

Construction

What goes into our UV cabinet

UV germicidal lamp

An integrated UV-C lamp exposes items inside to germicidal light.

UV timer control

A timer with digital display sets the exposure time for each cycle, so every load gets the same dose.

Lockable door

A lockable door with safety key lock keeps the cabinet closed while the lamp runs.

Shelf

A single shelf spreads items out so the light reaches them, with space above for the lamp to cover the whole load.

SS 304 or SS 316

SS 304 in a mirror finish, SS 316 on request.

Buying guide

How to choose the right UV cabinet

Size

Choose a cabinet large enough to spread items out, so the light reaches every surface.

Exposure time

Set the cycle time in your procedure; the dose depends on time and lamp strength.

Lamp hours

Keep a log of lamp hours and replace lamps at their rated life, since UV output falls before they stop glowing.

Door and safety

The lamp should run only with the door closed; a lockable door keeps it shut.

Material

SS 304 for most areas; SS 316 where strong disinfectants are used.

Cleaning

Clean items before treatment and wipe the cabinet regularly; dust on the lamp or items blocks the light.

Questions

F.A.Q.

Do you supply UV cabinets outside Pune?

Yes. We manufacture in Pune and supply UV cabinets across India, including Mumbai, Hyderabad, Chennai, Bangalore and Ahmedabad. Share your requirement and we will send a quotation.

Does a UV cabinet sterilise items?

No. UV light reduces microbes on surfaces it reaches directly, but shadows, folds and dust block it. Items should be cleaned before they go in; UV is an extra step, not a replacement for cleaning or sterilisation.

How often should the UV lamp be replaced?

At the lamp's rated life. UV output falls over time even while the lamp still glows, so keep a log of lamp hours and replace it on schedule.
